Xmas Poem

A poem forwarded to me by John Grayson.

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,

HE LIVED ALL ALONE,

IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE,

MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY,

WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,

AND TO SEE JUST WHO,

IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,

A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,

NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,

NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,

JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,

ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES,

OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,

AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,

A SOBER THOUGHT,

CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,

IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,

I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,

ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,

SILENT, ALONE,

CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR,

IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,

THE ROOM IN DISORDER,

NOT HOW I PICTURED,

A TRUE BRITISH SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO,

OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?

CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,

THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALISED THE FAMILIES,

THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,

OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS,

WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,

THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,

AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE,

A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM,

EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,

BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,

LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER,

HOW MANY LAY ALONE,

ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE,

IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT,

A TEAR TO MY EYE,

I DROPPED TO MY KNEES,

AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED,

AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,

"SANTA DON'T CRY,

THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,

I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,

MY LIFE IS MY GOD,

MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS...."

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,

I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,

I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,

SO SILENT AND STILL,

AND WE BOTH SHIVERED,

FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE,

ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,

THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR,

SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,

WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,

WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA,

IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE."

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,

AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,

AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT."

This poem was written by a Peacekeeping soldier stationed overseas. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable

PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to all of the service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.

Motörhead - 1916

16 years old when I went to the war,

To fight for a land fit for heroes,

God on my side, and a gun in my hand,

Chasing my days down to zero,

And I marched and I fought and I bled and I died,

And I never did get any older,

But I knew at the time that a year in the line,

Is a long enough life for a soldier,

We all volunteered, and we wrote down our names,

And we added two years to our ages,

Eager for life and ahead of the game,

Ready for history's pages,

And we brawled and we fought and we whored 'til we stood,

Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,

A thirst for the Hun, we were food for the gun,

And that's what you are when you're soldiers,

I heard my friend cry, and he sank to his knees,

Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother,

And I fell by his side, and that's how we died,

Clinging like kids to each other,

And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood,

And I wept as his body grew colder,

And I called for my mother and she never came,

Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame,

The day not half over and ten thousand slain,

And now there's nobody remembers our names,

And that's how it is for a soldier.

Thanks

Recieved this from the Royal British Legion , and would like to thank everyone that has made a donation  or has sponsored me in anyway or just given moral support ,Thank you.

Dear Mr Holden,

Over the past few weeks the nation has united in respect to remember the fallen. Poppies have bloomed and our volunteer army has been out in force on a high street near you.

On Sunday 14th November, as the time neared 11.00am, the Poppy-wearing crowds, gathered in London around the Cenotaph, waited expectantly. On the stroke of 11.00am Big Ben chimed and a hush fell over the usual clamour of the city. For two minutes people of all ages remembered the courage of those men and women who lost their lives during conflict. Many thought of family, friends and comrades, while others simply bowed their heads in respect for all who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Then, the band struck up and the 10,000 strong column of veterans began the annual march past the Cenotaph, applauded all the way.

This year we are hoping to raise a record-breaking £36 million from the Poppy Appeal. So far the figures are promising and I hope that we will meet this target. Of course the more we raise the more we can do to support our veterans young and old.

Once again, thank you for all your support of the 2010 Poppy Appeal, let's hope that together we can raise the money we need to help those that need it most.

With best wishes,

Russell Thompson OBE

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

we shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Sturmovik Commander

As mentioned earlier those great chaps at Sturmovik Commander have allowed us to use their rules in our British Legion fund Raising campaign, but now they have made a nice contribution by sponsering us with some very nice models, and scenery for our games plus advirtising as well can I just thank them along with our other sponsers for helping us so much and ask everyone to follow the link in our sonsers Section to the Sturmovik Commanders web page and they have a very useful yahoo group as well. Thank you Marcin and team. The Rules are free to download and are very playable ,you do not need loads of models or be a mechanical genius to build flight stands and they have loads of back up stuff ,like scenarios ,add on rules for almost everything you can think of and they are a "Living rule set" in other words constantly being added to and improved ,and the team  encourage feed back from players.

Saturday, 9 October 2010

Here are a few cards I have designed for UK forces replacing the USA orientated wording on  the AA and FOF Asset cards .When I am satisfied with them and hace a full set I will willingly send them to any one who drops me a line.

RAF Memorial

The plaque in Newark dedicated to all who served from the many Airfields around the area. We will be running WW2 Air combat games to raise funds for The Royal British Legion using the Sturmovik Commander rules ,just to remind everyone that The Legion gives support to all branches of our armed forces from all conflicts past and present.

Malayan Emergency

I was looking for a new period to play for myself but that would tie in with my Fundraising for the Royal British Legion and for use with Ambush alley's Force on Force.I looked at ww11 which is a favourite period of mine ,but already on show at most convention's .I wanted something a little different and out of the blue came Inkerman castings Malayan range , a superb range that promises to cover everything needed and a fascinating conflict .Using force on force Ambush Valley add on , I will field the Communist terrorists as the lists for Viet Cong Main Force ,with D8 troop quality and D8 Morale ,but with the poorly supplied rule .This represents the fact that at least the CT's leaders where well trained and used to fightiing in that area during the second world war , and the fact that after the first few months the supplies began to dry up due to increased security force numbers and the hearts and minds policy that was brought in. The special rules Ambush , Lack of initiative ,poor communication Elusive foe ,victory through blood , Reinforce and Fight another day ,will also be used.
The Commonwealth forces will be classed as ANZACS with TQ D10 and M D10 (this may change in some scenarios to represent a force with a large number of national service men rather than regulars) he special rule Rules of engagement will be used.

As yet I have not decided on Morale and TQ for the Police units and plantation owners ,any help appreciated.

For more info on the Malayan Emergency read  The War of the Running Dogs by Noel Barber and there a couple of links in my links section as well. The Inkerman range can be seen at the Brittania miniatures site .

Better pictures and samples are regulary seen on the ambush Alley Forum. I hope to put up some better photos as soon as possible.

Sturmovik Commander

Hi  after recently finding these great rules ,I have spoken to Marcin Gerkowicz and he has allowed us to use these rules as part of our fundraising efforts for the Royal British Legion. So the plan for games next year are: Ambush Alley using Britsh and Taliban forces as this year plus ,Force on Force for the Malayan Emergency and World War 2 Aircombat using Sturmovik Commander .Please take a look at this fantastic rule set that is fully supported with extras and scenarios ,a great web site http://www.sturmovik-commander.com/ and a yahoo group http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/sturmovik-commander/?yguid=185532224 .

The Town that never forgets

From Royal British Legion suppporters letter
Sept 2010

" It happened spontaneously. Three years ago a lone Hearse containing a flag-draped coffin passed slowly along Wootton Bassett High street .By chance three men- one of whom is a local British Legion member -were there. They stood to attention. It was only later they discovered it was a fallen soldier who been repatriated at neaby RAF Lyneham .
At the next repatriation the numbers of people payng their respects grew, and so it continued .Now with the numbers of young service men and women who have died whilst defending our freedom in Afghanistan reaching over 320 ,the pavements of this small wiltshire market town are six deep with townspeople paying their repects at each repatriation".

In honour of the towns repatriations The Royal British legion is to open a Field of rememberance dedicated to all those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan.A member of the Royal Family will open the Field of Rememberance on 9th November 2010 inWootten Bassett.

Remember them please support the Royal British Legion .

Britannia Mongoose comparison

Britannia Jackle & Mongoose technical
Britannia Afghans next to a Mongoose technical

The mongoose is slightly slimmer

Side by side

The Mongoose kit kindly sent by Matakishi visit his amazing site http://www.matakishi.com/index.htm

On a recent thread on the Ambush Alley forum it was mentioned that Mongoose publishing was getting rid of some of their ranges, including the battlefield evolution range .I was interested in the technicals that were being sold off at £4.99 for three ,so on the AA forum I asked if any one knew if they 20mm scale , going one better Matakishi sent me three he no longer required ,and here they are , plus some comparison shots with the 20mm Technical sold by Britannia and with some of 20mm afghans and a Jackle also from Britannia . A good match I think.

Kelham Island 1940's weekend

A couple of pictures of some of Lelhams exhibits

During the school holidays we had a family visit to a local museum called Kelham island ,a city center site of old steel works and the famous little mesters workshops. There was a 1940's weekend in progress when we visited which was great fun and a lot of military exhibits from sheffields war efforts were on display plus a lot of older weapons .During our visit we met an extraordinary chap called Geoff Blore who runs an excellent book store called Dicky Bloods Books .This remakable gent prints and distributes books that focus the ordinary service men and are mainly biographys concerning ww2 I bought a copy of SAVED BY THE BOMB by Brian Carter which covers his story from being a school boy at the start of the war to enlisting with the Navy commanding a landing craft on D-Day and being sent t help with the proposed invasion of Japan. wonderful book ,please visit the website. http://www.dickybloodsbooks.net/.
