Zulu War Graves -our recent visits

We have just spent 8 days in Devon and 2 days in Portsmouth so whilst there and on the way down and back we visited as many graves and memorials for the survivors of the Anglo - Zulu war as we possibly could ,I know we missed some and could not get entry to a couple of memorials and tombs due to locked churches but below are the fellows we visited in the order we found them .We tried when possible to give the markers a good clean as we usually do but we did have limited time as we had other places to visit and things to do .

LT Henry Lysons

won his VC at Hhlobane was also at Kambula and Ulundi
HENRY MARTIN
 Defender of Rorkes Drift

Thomas Daw
another Rorkes Drift survivor

Sir REDVERS BULLER VC

His Grave and a wonderful memorial inside the church

 Gen HENRY HOPE CREALOCK
Comander of the first division well regarded in private life and the subject of a very nice local inn there is a sarcophigus inside the church but this was locked at the time of our visit .

Gen JOHN NORTH CREALOCK

Capt JAMES FENCOTT JAMES

13th Light Infantry -a hard one to find very over grown my good lady had taken some shears with us so we managed to clear little way around him

SGT FRANCIS ATTWOOD DCM
one of the commissariat at Rorkes Drift -sadly his original grave along with many others  was destroyed during the blitz on Plymouth and all their remains were moved to another cemetery and put into unmarked graves ,recently a plaque was put up thanks to the efforts of a serving Royal Marine . This was hard to find .

Lt GILBERT TOTHILL MUNRO
fought at Gingindlovo -Eshowe and Ulundi

Lt HENRY ALEXANDER SCHANK

Schank and Munro above are both buried in Teignmouth old cemertery a lovely place being restored by volunteers one of them agreat chap named Dave not only found Schanks grave for us but also provided lots of info and documents as well , sadly it looks like the local council had ideas for the use of this prime land so our heroes may lose their buetiful resting place ,so if you intend to visit please do so soon and support these great volunteers

Graves of the heroes of the Zulu War -Samual Wassall VC

Private Samual Wassall of the 80th Regiment won his VC at Isandhlwana ,whilst escaping from the carnage on the battlefield he saw a comrade drowning in the river ,without hesitating he jumped in and rescued him whilst closely pursued by the Zulu;

Close to Samuals Grave is this one fora member of the 24th who fell in ww1

also nearby some canadian sailors one known only to god , the saddest words on any war graves
