Cold war stuff (setback no 2)

I was planning to use Britannias miniatures to build my 1980;s BAOR army until the sad loss of Dave then I was hopeful when another company took over and I placed my order , waited ages for the invoice then paid and soon after my little parcel arrived really excited but had to put it on one side due to illness and work.Opened it up to start paintimg and get my army finished . How sad the resin 3 of the 4  FV432's I ordered were awful miscasts.some  miniatures had broken rifles and some packs were wrong . If I can get the heart up to start again I will order from Liberation and S&S .what a shame I do hope I just got the exception to the rule Daves service and figures were superb.

Prize teaser

OK seeing as I keep getting asked ....prizes will include of course lots of Force on Force goodies from Ambush Alley  and Osprey ,a magazine subscription from Caliver and a £30.00 gift voucher from the Perry twins that includes free postage as well..Keep Watching

Wargames Emporium

Just a quick one to reply to a couple of emails I have had ,The Raffle tickets are only available from the Sheffield Branch of Wargames Emporium and from there on line shop. The Mansfield branch does not have them (yet) .Plus there appears to be someone advertising as  Wargames Emporium in Bolton this is definately not part of John's empire and is definately NOT selling tickets .A list of Prizes should be up soon.

hind Commander ,First Look

Marcin Gerkowicz ,the very nice chap behind Sturmovik commander has kindly sent me a copy of his new rule set Hind Commander. Although I have not had the chance to play these yet ,I certainly like what I see not only chopper v chopper rules but these incorporate ground units as well I will be buying some new toys to game this, so I thought I would put up a little review based on my first look at the book.

Presentation: a nice looking card backed book nice and eye catching ,leaving no doubt what its there for.

What Do you Get : 100 pages ,not including covers, pages 2-3 are a very concise index ,The next 7 sides are the introduction which not only explains the reasoning behind the rules but also terms used in the rules and what you need to play .pages 17-26 cover the turn sequence explaining each step with nice clear colour photo's and explanations.P27-37 all the additional rules and special rules,The rest of the book is explaining how to determine forces, how long the game should last and how to end it,plus all the stats for most common helicopters and several scenarios which in turn cover all the rules so you slowly build into the game . There are also included with the book 12 full colour card and token sheets ,these are seperate so no awkward photo copying or having to cut your nice new book up &2 summery sheets .

Expansions: there is no mention of expansions ,to be honest I think everything is covered in this book .There is however a great web site and forum with official downloads which are starting to cover the copters and aircraft not in the main rules.

Down Side: none for me really but others might not like the fact that the counters and cards are not perforated so be  careful with those scissors and there are no solo rules but on the forum Marcin has said he will try to develope this at a later date.

Over all : Very Nice with some nice touches that make the game different. 9out of 10

How do you get them : UK caliver books stock them or from the Hind Commander web site which also sells pre made battle boxes to go with the rules ,there is a handy currency convertor on the ordering page and personally I do not think the postage is over the top.
I hopefully will get to do some after action reports soon.

Hind Commander

Just a quick post ,I have just found out that the people behind sturmovik Commander has just published a set of helicopter warfare rules ,I have not yet seen them but if they are half as good as the free Sturmovik rules then they will be worth having. I believe they are available in the UK through Caliver Books and on thier own website  http://www.hind-commander.com/

Elhiem Figures Review

Most modern gamers will already be aware of Matt at Elhiem's work ,I for one wasn't though, I was a big  fan of Britannia's modern Brits & Afghan Stuff but with the sad loss of Dave Howitt I was left with a few gaps in my collection .I did look at another well known manufacturer but was put off by a poor website and unanswered emails so I tried Elhiem and very glad I am too ,not only a very good service and help with my fundraising but really wonderful figures as well .The modern the British packs are nice and in use able sets , I was lucky in that as I was ready to put my order in a few new packs appeared for example two female dog handlers . The taliban are nice and come with a nice selection of  weapons some are carrying AK's with slung RPG's etc .Above are some comparison shots of a Elhiem (unpainted) and a Britannia sorry for poor quality.

Overall Comparison's
Elhiem slightly Slimmer than Britannia
Some weapons are almost identical in size some are not ?
Elhiem's Taliban have a more modern appearance than Dave |Howitts at first glance I wasnt impressed with the dogs from Elhiem but now I have them painted can't think what I thought was wrong.
sets of Separate back packs some with weapons are a nice touch and allow for a bigger selection of figures
Mix together on the Table very well ,will try some more photo's later.

Hammerhead Report. A good Game and new friends

Well our first fund raising game went well ,we raised a nice  amount for the Royal British Legion , and everyone that played enjoyed the scenario ,we had a mix of new players  and old. Most importantly we met some new friends and I would like to thank Chesterfield Open Gaming Society ( G.O.G.S) for being our hosts .The Society of Twentieth Century Wargamers (S.O.T.C.W) who based on the table adjacent to ours helped with our fund raising , and the guys at Critical Mass Games whose figures we will be using for our tommorow war games , the Critical Mass team kindly sponsered us . And a special mention to the gent who kindly pointed out we were using the wrong shade of flock to represent afghanistan grass  ?.A great Venue and a nice show .

Hopefully all will go well at the shows and we will raise some funds for the Royal British Legion as well.More details after the shows ,we dont want to give all the surprises away.
