Wednesday night Gaming - Predator

Last night at sheffield wargames Society we played the Predator scenario (bungle in the Jungle )from AAG's classidied expansion .A good game with some home grown add ons ,the alien took out a few non descript troops before tackling Jesse Ventura and his mini gun and was given a nasty wound allowing the rest of the team to blast it to bits ,which goes to prove that you dont mess with a big Jesse . The jungle bits are the stuff Ive been making for my Nam project ,the mat is the 6x4 grasslands from urban matz the buildings are an old Brittania resin and a Sarissa MDF which is 15mm but fits very nicley with the 20mm stuff .

wednesday night gaming -Who yer gonna call - GHOSTBUSTERS

My mate John managed to get the Ghostbusters board game for £1.50 due to some gift voucher deal so we gave it ago last night and it was good fun .The game contains lots of ghosts and ghoulies plus slimer , stay puft and the 4 guys all based on the catoon series .The game plays from scenario cards which can be played as one offs or campaigns where the players build experience by closing the gates to the spirit world ,trapping ghosts and un-slimiing their team mates ,it plays very well we were doing very little rules refering after the first few turns and managed to get 2 scenarios finished in under 3 hours . All good fun
and a fantastic turn out at sheffield club as well about 30 of us playing 7 different games

The Kingdom is Ours

I've been lookingfor a quick play set of rules for the ECW for a while so when I saw these advertised I was interested especially with" the fight a 28mm gam on a 6x4 table in under 3 hours" bit  ,so I bought them .Here is a first impression review of the rules .

THE GOOD BITS
A glossy soft cover set  of rules ,80odd pages in length with lots of colour pics of figures which I presume are all Bicorne .The book consists of the following:

IntroductionBy author
Civil War introduction                      P7
Battles &Skirmishes of the ECW     P9
Troops&weapons of the ECW          P12
Suggested equipment                        P15
Unit Make Up                                   P17
Unit Tracking                                   P19
Fast Play Rules                                P21
Play sheet                                         P59
Examples                                         P64
Battle of Roundway Down              P72
Reading list                                      P77
Bicorne catalogue                            P78

As you can see the rules dont take up all the book theres lots of interesting stuff in there
it all seems at first look very easy to follow and well laid out .
Bicorne sell packs of dice for the rules although any dice will do and they inform me that unit trackers will be available from them soon .
Lots of advanced rules if you want them
A decent price for a rule set these days

THE NITTY GRITTY
The system uses D6's & D10's

orders are issued and turns taken by drawing dice from bag a different colour of die  for each Tercio the bag also contains the Purple dice of doom ,which when drawn ends the turn and may bring other events into action such as units running away

Each sides number of order dice are decided on by the number of units in play at the start of a turn and how many die the commanders gains the bigger the army the harder it is to give orders also the training of the army effects orders ,if aunit is lost the next turn the dice for that unit are no longer included

figures are based on multiple bases the basic unit is aTercio a Standard Tercio consists of
a mounted commander
2 horse regiments
3 foot regiments
1 saker
The above can be changed in the advanced rules or by scenario

a foot regiment consist of 32 figures the pike/shot ratio varies on year played etc

THE NOT SO GOOD BITS ( in my eyes at first glance )

not many gripes really , the play sheet is in the middle part of the book so is virtually impossible to photocopy without damaging your book ,how ever it states you can download from the Helion site however I could not find it I emailed Helion and did not recieve reply so contacted Bicorne who replied almost immediately saying it was not yet available but they were looking at it .
Only 1 scenario but it is a good one
A couple of bits may annoy other players such as having the bicorne catologue in the book and the use of a protracter for fire arcs but I am pretty happy with my first look  and will be making my armies up to suit .
8/10

Anzac platoon for Vietnam

Finally got round to finishing my Anzac platoon for Ambush Valley .For the scenario I am working on the platoon consists of :

Platoon HQ:
1 x Officer
1 x NCO
1xRTO
1xRunner
1 xMedic

Then 3 sections each of:

Rifle Element 1
1 x section leader
1x scout
1x m60gunner
1x assistant gunner
1 x Rifleman

Rifle section 2
1 x Assistant Section Leader
1 x scout
3 x Riflemen

The figures are a mix of Brittania and RH which gives me a platoon made of almost individual figures, each carrying the correct weapon ,either M16's or SLR's.Tried basing to represent the famous thick red/brown mud and thejungle areas the Anzacs fought in .

Wednesday Night Gaming -the battle of Sahagun

Went to the club last night just with the intention of having agood look round the new venue and having a chat but Tim Gow invited me to play in his game which I did with no hesitation. The rules were Command & colours which I had never played before and the scenario was the Battle of Sahagun which I had never heard of , historically it was cavalry battle in Spain in 1808 won by the British with the Fench taking heavy lossses . The game was very exciting and the rules were very easy to pick up ,using a form of order cards and then changing things by using tactical cards ,as I said the game was exciting as the advantage moved almost every turn from side to side but as the French players we managed to re wright history and gain a victory by stuffing the British cavalry rather than our initial plan of gaining victory points by running ..er sorry tactically withdrawing from the battle field .A great game hopefully will be invited to play it again .
start of game ,French lines looking toward the Brits just off pic were more Brits sneaking up on our rear

End of game ..Viva la france
